GNCTR 2024

2024 marked a big year for GNCTR – the 50th anniversary. MECTT had the honour to partake in this event, held in St. John’s, Newfoundland, from February 6th to 11th. The team’s theme was Ratatouille, and they fully embodied the rat spirit at competition. From May 2023 – February 2024, the rats scurried relentlessly to prepare for this event.

The brakes sub-team, Mark Coates and Claire Schleger, ensured the toboggan’s stopping system was both reliable and innovative. The steering sub-team, Evelyn Madonia and Trevor Campbell, focused on designing a responsive system that allowed the toboggan to navigate with ease. The superstructure sub-team, Kristin Seymour and Alisa Neang, concentrated on the overall framework, ensuring that the toboggan was lightweight yet strong. The concrete sub-team, Luke Elmes and Nathaniel Feddema, experimented with different mixtures to achieve optimal strength for the skis. The theme (Pobe Tran and Sarah Sohn) and spirit (Nik Bennett and Jack Ducheck) sub-teams both worked hard to create a cohesive and exciting team identity. The sponsorship sub-captain, Iyah Alideeb, secured the funds that enabled the team to access necessary materials and equipment. Lastly, the team captains, Evie Chapman and Liam Kamerman, guided all of these efforts with exceptional leadership. The team proudly secured third place overall in the competition, which appropriately reflected their hard work and determination.

Not only was 2024 a big year for GNCTR, but it was also a big year for MECTT. For many of the rats, GNCTR 2024 was their last competition before graduation. A big and heartfelt thank you goes out to the incredible graduates who left a huge mark on the team and paved the way for future generations.
